Peppermint as
Palliative Therapy

Nature at Work

Peppermint is best known for its minty-fresh aroma. It is, by far, one of the most favored herbs for teas, toothpaste, candy and gum. Products using artificial peppermint flavorings do not carry the healing properties of the natural peppermint plant or essential oil that we use in our Angel Mint® candies.

“The health benefits of peppermint oil include its ability to treat indigestion, respiratory problems, headache, nausea, fever, stomach and bowel spasms, as well as pain.

Peppermint is a cross between watermint and spearmint and is native to Europe. This antimicrobial herb has been known for its medicinal uses, and its impressively long history often gives it the prestigious title as the world’s oldest medicine.

Peppermint oil contains numerous minerals and nutrients including manganese, iron, magnesium, calcium, folate, potassium, and copper. It also contains omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin A and Vitamin C.” (1). It also has an antioxidant ability to neutralize free radicals.

Angel Mint® Palliative Therapy Benefits

Palliative therapy is gaining attention in the medical world because it offers a humane and patient-tailored alternative to expensive drugs and diagnostics for people facing illness or health concerns. A standard practice in many countries, especially Britain, palliative therapy has only recently sparked interest in the United States.

The primary goal of palliative therapy is not to cure; it is to provide comfort and enhance the quality of life. Common forms of palliative therapy include aromatherapy, therapeutic music, humor, visual or performing arts, pet visits, and massage. All of these forms of care aim ease anxiety, provide comfort, reduce mental stress, and to help manage pain. Depending on a patient’s circumstances, they may choose to couple palliative therapy with a medical treatment regiment. If a cure is not possible, it is common for palliative therapy to be used alone. Although still in early stages of development here in the United States, palliative therapy’s versatile and individualized approach to care offers new hope and comfort to both patients and their families.

The Florida Candy Factory’s Angel Mint® has recently found its place in the emerging world of palliative care. An all natural, fat free, salt-free, soy free, and gluten free peppermint treat, Angel Mint® is ideal for helping with comfort and relief. The numerous health benefits of peppermint oil have been studied and proven by the scientific community. Although often thought of as a mere flavoring, the therapeutic value of peppermint oil is taken very seriously.

Patients undergoing chemotherapy often find the Angel Mint® helps soothe their throat and dry mouth, as well as reduce the metallic taste that treatment often leaves behind. Like palliative therapy, the Angel Mint® has no known medicinal benefits. It helps treat the person and some symptoms, not the disease. Clearly, Angel Mint® candies are angelic in more ways than one. With their splendid taste and therapeutic abilities, it’s no wonder these mints have such a heavenly name.
